Ergonomic Stool Guide for Office, Studio and Workshop Use

Ergonomic stool guide for offices, studios and workshops: task, standing and drafting stools explained, how to match heights and which pro stools fit.

Short answer

An ergonomic stool is a height-adjustable seat that supports a good working position for the task and lets the user move. Match the stool type to the work surface: task stools for standard desks and benches, saddle stools for close work, and drafting or leaning stools for tall counters and standing desks. Check height range, backrest, base and castors.

What is an ergonomic stool?

An ergonomic stool is a height-adjustable seat designed so the user can sit at the right height for the task, keep a balanced posture and move easily. Unlike a basic stool, it usually has a gas-lift column, a swivel, a shaped or saddle seat and a choice of castors or glides. Offices, studios, labs and workshops use ergonomic stools where a full chair is too bulky.

A quick note on our own range: Mars stools are designed for therapy, salon and studio work. Many of them suit office and workshop use at standard seated heights, but we do not make extended drafting-height stools or leaning stools. This guide explains those categories so you can choose the right product, wherever it comes from.

Office stool, task stool or chair stool: what is the difference?

An office stool chair, sometimes sold simply as a chair stool, sits between a stool and a chair: a compact seat with a small backrest and no arms. It suits hot-desking areas, meeting points and labs where people sit for short periods and need to tuck the seat away.

Standing, drafting and leaning stools explained

These are the categories buyers most often confuse.

Drafting stool

A drafting stool is a tall task stool with a long gas lift, a foot ring and usually a backrest. It is built for counters, drawing tables and reception desks that sit well above standard desk height. We do not make extended drafting-height stools; for tall counters, buy a dedicated drafting stool and check its seat height range against the counter.

Standing stool and leaning stool

A standing stool, often called a leaning stool, lets users perch while staying close to standing height. The seat is usually tilted forward and the base is often a single column on a weighted or rocking foot rather than castors. It is the typical stool for a standing workstation and is meant for short perching breaks, not long sitting. Mars does not make leaning stools.

Sit to stand stool

A sit to stand stool is a broad term for any seat that covers the gap between sitting and standing, from tall saddles to leaning perches. If a customer wants one for a height-adjustable desk, start by measuring the desk at the user's preferred standing and sitting heights.

Tall stools for counters

Tall stools for kitchen counters, bars and shop counters are furniture rather than work seating, usually with fixed frames. They are not interchangeable with professional rolling stools.

Which professional stools suit office and workshop use?

At standard seated heights, many salon and therapy stools work well as an ergonomic stool for working at a desk, bench or lab counter. They are compact, adjustable and built for daily commercial use.

For workbench stool with backrest or shop stools with backs, check two things carefully: whether the bench is at standard seated height, and whether the shop floor is clean enough for castors. On rough or dusty floors, glides may be the safer choice.

How do you match a stool to the work surface?

Height is the single biggest factor in comfort. Follow these steps for any stool for working:

  1. Measure the surface. Desk, bench or counter height from the floor.
  2. Sit at the surface. With shoulders relaxed, the elbows should be close to the surface height, or slightly above it for keyboard work.
  3. Check the feet. Feet should rest flat on the floor or on a foot ring. If the feet dangle, add a foot ring or footrest.
  4. Check the thighs. On a flat seat, thighs roughly level; on a saddle, thighs sloping down.
  5. Compare with the stool spec. The stool's height range must cover the seat height you need, with some margin.

If the seat height you need is beyond a standard stool's range, you need a drafting or standing stool rather than a taller version of an ordinary one.

Ergonomic stool buying checklist

  • Height range that covers the work surface, measured from floor to seat top
  • Gas lift class and test standard for commercial use
  • Backrest if users sit for longer periods
  • Seat shape: round for short tasks, saddle for close work, contoured for longer sitting
  • Base and castors: soft castors for hard floors, hard castors for carpet, glides for fixed benches
  • Upholstery: PU or PVC leatherette is easy to clean in labs and workshops
  • Spare parts: gas lifts and castors available separately
  • Warranty: ask the period and what it covers

Are ergonomic stools for office use a good idea?

Ergonomic stools for office use work best as part of a mix. They suit short tasks, collaboration areas and users who like to move. For someone who sits at a desk for most of the day, a full task chair with a backrest and arms is usually more comfortable. Offering both lets each person choose.

For distributors and office suppliers

  • Range fit: professional stools from a salon and therapy line can extend an office or lab catalogue at standard heights; do not position them as drafting or leaning stools.
  • MOQ: stools generally start from 200 pcs per model, with colour mixing.
  • Lead time: samples in 3 to 7 days; production 25 to 35 days for standard models and 35 to 45 days for custom ones.
  • OEM: neutral office colours, logo print, branded cartons and barcodes.
  • Standards: office seating standards vary by market; ask which test reports are available for each model.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an office stool and a drafting stool?

An office stool works at standard desk or bench height and often has no backrest or a small one. A drafting stool has a longer gas lift, a foot ring and usually a backrest so it can be used at tall counters and drawing tables.

Is a standing stool the same as a leaning stool?

Usually, yes. Both let you perch close to standing height, typically on a forward-tilted seat and a single column base. They are designed for short breaks at a standing workstation rather than long periods of sitting.

Can salon or therapy stools be used in an office or workshop?

Many can, at standard seated heights. Stools with a backrest suit longer tasks, and saddle stools suit close work. They are not a substitute for drafting-height or leaning stools at tall counters or standing desks.

Does Mars make drafting or leaning stools?

No. Mars stools are designed for therapy, salon and studio work at standard seated heights, and many suit office and workshop use. For tall counters or standing desks, buyers should choose a dedicated drafting or leaning stool.

What height should an ergonomic stool be?

Set it so your elbows are close to the work surface height, your feet rest flat on the floor or a foot ring, and your thighs are level on a flat seat or sloping down on a saddle. Measure the surface first and check the stool's height range.
